Fourteen people have died in an outbreak of Lassa fever in Taraba
State. Daily Trust learnt that the deaths and the cases were recorded
in the state within the last 3 months.
The head of Clinical Services at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC),
Jalingo, Dr Kuni Joseph, disclosed the alarming figures, noting that 6
of the deaths occurred last week.
He revealed that between 24 Oct 2024 and January this year [2025],
there were 84 suspected cases of Lassa fever, 33 of which were
confirmed positive. Dr Joseph said, however, that 9 patients had been
successfully treated and discharged, while 6 others were still on
admission at the Federal Medical Centre Jalingo.
“This is the first time we are recording such a significant number of
cases in Taraba State, and efforts are being made to address the
outbreak. We have intensified our efforts, and with joint meetings
held by FMC Jalingo, the Taraba State Ministry of Health, and
officials from the World Health Organization (WHO), it will be
addressed,” he said.
