Scenario: Farmer arrives on scene with breakfast to find a completely bottle raised kid named “wicket” isolated and weakly calling out. She tries to stand up and walk when you call but can’t rise above a kneel.
Check: Take goat’s temperature. It was 98deg. Bad sign, needs to be above 💯deg. Listen to left side of midgut and no sounds. Bad sign. She is struggling to lift head now.
Response: Electrolyte paste. Warm blanket and heating pad 30 mins. Body temperature rises above 💯deg. I can literally hear stomach sounds fire back up as her head lifts. Antibiotics once temp is 101deg.
Less than 3 mins later goat can walk again. Take her outside and she can eat grass. She also goes to the bathroom.
Then lost her on second day. She was playing at night, getting better, but climate change weather and she laid on her side to sleep in the hotbox I created in barn. I tried to revive in AM with hot water and she started breathing labored again in with left side against sink and head supported by arm. When I switched her to right side with chin on shelf of sink she passed. Heartbreaking, these little goats.
