As temperatures continue to rise, added thermal energy can destabilize environmental states that have long constrained the movement of water and material. In glaciated mountains, melting ice, thawing permafrost, and declining structural stability can transform relatively constrained landscapes into increasingly dynamic systems of runoff, erosion, sediment transport, and mass movement.
Therein exists a vast range of human susceptibility: vulnerability emerges where populations and infrastructure intersect environments undergoing rapid state change. As those environments disintegrate and reorganize, water and material will follow the gradients and pathways available to them toward lower-potential states. The consequences will not be distributed equally.
