New Mexico health department reports 2 more measles cases in Lea
County

The New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) reports 2 adult Lea County
residents tested positive for measles Thursday [13 Feb 2025], as
confirmed by the NMDOH Scientific Laboratory Division, totaling to 3
cases this week.
New Mexico meets the CDC’s outbreak criteria with 3 unrelated cases in
Lea County. The cases border Texas’s Gaines County, where cases have
jumped from 2 to 48 cases in 2 weeks. While a connection to the Texas
outbreak is suspected, it remains unconfirmed.
“We are investigating every suspected case, and we encourage sick
individuals with symptoms consistent with measles to seek medical
care,” said Dr. Chad Smelser, NMDOH deputy state epidemiologist.
NMDOH is notifying potentially exposed individuals and providing
prevention guidance. If you visited these locations during specified
times, you may have been exposed:
– Stone Elementary School, Hobbs, NM, on Thu 6 Feb 2025
– Albertsons grocery store, 2402 N. Grimes St., Hobbs, NM, between the
hours of 1 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. on Thu 6 Feb 2025
– Albertsons grocery store, 2402 N. Grimes St., Hobbs, NM, between the
hours of 1 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. on Sat 8 Feb 2025
– Crosswinds Community Church, 1701 N Jefferson St., Hobbs, NM,
between the hours of 9 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. on Sun 9 Feb 2025
– Walgreens, 801 Joe Harvey Blvd, Hobbs, NM, between the hours of 3
p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sun 9 Feb 2025
– Nor-Lea Hospital emergency department between the hours of 9 a.m.
and 3 p.m. on Mon 10 Feb 2025
– Nor-Lea Hospital extended hours clinic, 1923 N Dal Paso, Hobbs, NM,
between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Mon 10 Feb 2025
– Nor-Lea Hospital emergency department between the hours of 1 p.m.
and 3 p.m. on Tue 11 Feb 2025.
If you were at these locations during the listed times, monitor for
symptoms. If symptoms develop, isolate, and call your healthcare
provider and inform them of possible measles exposure before visiting.
The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine works very well, making it far
less likely for you to get measles than someone unvaccinated with no
immunity. Those born before 1957 are already immune.
Vaccination provides strong protection; however, if you are vaccinated
and develop symptoms after exposure, consult a healthcare provider.
Most adults vaccinated as children are presumed to be immune.

Measles exposure risk at NJ hospital, health officials warn

The New Jersey Department of Health warned residents Friday [14 Feb
2025] that a person with measles recently visited the emergency
department at Englewood Hospital in Bergen County. The department said
the person, who had recently traveled internationally, visited the
hospital on 9 Feb [2025] between 11:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.
Anyone who was at the hospital at that time may have been exposed and
was asked to contact a doctor as soon as possible to discuss potential
exposure and risk of developing the illness, according to a release
from the department. The virus spreads easily through the air when
someone coughs or sneezes and can remain in the air for up to 2 hours
after an infected person leaves the area, officials said. People can
also get sick when they come in contact with mucus or saliva from an
infected person. The department stressed people should call their
doctor first before arriving at any facility so that necessary
infection prevention precautions can be taken to protect other
patients and staff.
Measles symptoms include a high fever, cough, runny nose, watery red
eyes, and a rash that usually appears between 3 and 5 days after
symptoms begin, health officials said. The rash usually begins as flat
red spots that appear on the face at the hairline and spread downward
to the neck, torso, arms, legs, and feet, authorities said. Measles
can also cause serious complications, such as pneumonia and
encephalitis and can lead to miscarriage in pregnant people, premature
birth, or a low-birth-weight baby.
People at risk include those who have not been fully vaccinated or
have not had measles in the past, the department said. Anyone who was
potentially exposed and infected could develop symptoms as late as 6
Mar [2025], officials said.
As of Friday [14 Feb 2025] investigators had not identified any
additional associated cases.

[Measles is not, and never was, a benign illness. It is important to
rapidly diagnose the infection and quickly isolate the case to prevent
further exposures and lessen the risk of secondary cases. This
requires health-care providers to understand how to diagnose the
infection early, even before the rash. In an attuned HCW, this should
take literally minutes.
– Hospitalization: About 1 in 5 unvaccinated people in the United
States who gets measles is hospitalized.
– Pneumonia: As many as 1 out of every 20 children with measles gets
pneumonia, the most common cause of death from measles in young
children.
– Encephalitis: About 1 child out of every 1000 who get measles will
develop encephalitis that can lead to convulsions and can leave the
child deaf or with intellectual disability.
– Death: Nearly 1 to 3 of every 1000 children who become infected with
measles will die from respiratory and neurologic complications.
– Complications during pregnancy: Measles may cause pregnant women who
have not had the MMR vaccine to give birth prematurely or have a
low-birth-weight baby.
