In recent hours, a 2nd death from Hantavirus [infection]was confirmed
in the region this year [2025], following the notification from the
Public Health Institute (ISP), which confirmed the positive diagnosis
of a 17-year-old patient in the commune of San Fernando.
The director of the O’Higgins Health Service, Jaime Gutiérrez,
reported that “the young man was admitted to the San Juan de Dios
Hospital in San Fernando in serious condition on 24 Mar 2025 going
directly to the resuscitation room. There, blood tests and a computed
tomography (CT) scan were performed, the results of which indicated
acute respiratory failure. After returning from the procedure, the
patient suffered decompensation and was readmitted to the
resuscitation room. He was intubated to manage his airway, but
suffered cardiorespiratory arrest. Despite resuscitation efforts, he
died at 2:47 a.m. on Tuesday, 25 Mar 2025.”
The tests [samples? results?] were sent to the Public Health Institute
(ISP) to confirm the presence of a Hantavirus, the results of which
were reported on Friday, 28 Mar 2025.
