Dengue cases in Bhopal [Madhya Pradesh state] surged to a 6-year high
in August [2024], confirmed district malaria office (DMO) monthly
reporting on Thursday [29 Aug 2024]. The peak season for vector-borne
diseases falls in the latter part of the year. More than 80% of these
cases are reported between September to December.

Close to 100 dengue cases were recorded this month [August 2024] alone, raising concerns about a potential spike similar to previous
years when nearly 2000 cases were recorded over the following 3
months.

Adding to the health concerns, chikungunya cases also saw a rise, with
22 cases reported in August [2024], compared to 47 cases in the entire
state of Madhya Pradesh till June [2024].

“Almost every day in August [2024], one new case of chikungunya has
been reported,” stated the district malaria office report. This trend
indicates a clear and present threat from the chikungunya virus too.

With cases rising in some areas, the call for vigilance and preventive
action remains strong. After Shapura, Saket Nagar, AIIMS Bhopal
campus, on Thursday [29 Aug 2024], densely populated areas Karond and
Kolar were mentioned on the hotspot list by the DMO.
