The circulation of West Nile virus has been detected for the 1st time
in the Gironde – Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of south-western France.
During autumn 2022, several horses developed neurological symptoms.
However, it was not until mid-July 2023 when the 1st human case of
West Nile virus infection was identified. Overall, 5 confirmed and 2
probable human cases have been reported to date [7 Aug 2023]. Among
them, 3 were asymptomatic, 2 had West Nile fever, and 2 developed West
Nile neuroinvasive disease (meningitis). All infections are suspected
to have been locally acquired in Gironde, including Bordeaux city and
suburbs. Investigations are being conducted to better understand the
circulation of West Nile virus in the area.
