A concerning outbreak of Zika virus has gripped Pune, with the total
number of cases now standing at 103. The proportion of pregnant women
among patients is notably higher, with 45 out of 103 patients
expecting.
The regional breakdown of Zika cases in Pune reveals a widespread
presence of the virus. Dahanukar Colony Regional Office has reported
20 cases, followed by Erandwane Regional Office with 19 cases. Other
affected areas include Kharadi (13 cases), Ghole Rasta and Pashan (9
cases each), Sukhsagarnagar and Mundhwa (7 cases each), Wanwadi (5
cases), Kalas (4 cases), Koregaon Park and Ambegaon Budruk (3 cases
each), Lohgaon (2 cases), and Vishrambagwara and Dhankawadi (1 case
each).
There are 3 new cases that have been detected in Erandwane Regional
Office, involving a 19-year-old woman and 2 men aged 59 and 69, all
exhibiting fever symptoms. These patients’ blood samples were sent to
the National Institute of Virology for testing.
Unfortunately, 5 Zika patients have succumbed to the virus in Pune,
all of whom were senior citizens with pre-existing co-morbidities. The
deceased patients include a 72-year-old man from Kharadi, a
95-year-old woman from Pashan, a 78-year-old man from Baner, a
68-year-old man from Kothrud, and a 76-year-old man from Karvenagar.
Pune Municipal Corporation and health authorities are working to
contain the outbreak, emphasizing the importance of mosquito control
measures and public awareness. Residents are advised to take necessary
precautions to prevent mosquito bites, the primary mode of Zika virus
transmission.
Key statistics from the outbreak include:
Total Zika cases: 103
Pregnant patients: 45
Patient deaths: 5
As the situation unfolds, Pune residents are urged to remain vigilant
and cooperate with health authorities to combat the Zika virus
outbreak.
