Burkina Faso’s health authorities announced on Sun 18 Feb 2024 an
active response, starting 26 Feb, to a measles epidemic that has
affected 1269 people, including 4 deaths, in the city of Ouagadougou
and 4 other localities.

The Centre des Opérations de Réponses aux Urgences Sanitaires
(CORUS) [Response Operations Centre to Health Emergencies] has
announced 1269 cases of measles, including 4 deaths, in the health
districts of Ouahigouya, Dori, Boromo, Solenzo, and in 2 districts of
Ouagadougou, the capital.

During a meeting organized for the press, the director of Population
Health Protection, Dr Hamed Sidwaya Ouédraogo, reassured them that
“the Ministry of Health plans to begin fairly intensive vaccination in
these outbreak districts from 26 Feb.”

The government has already announced its decision to carry out a vast
measles and rubella vaccination campaign between 15 and 21 Mar 2024.
At a cost of USD 6.7 million, the campaign will vaccinate over 3
million children aged between 9 and 59 months.
