The Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the Stevens County
Health Department have confirmed a measles case in a Stevens County
resident. It is unclear whether this case is linked to any ongoing
outbreaks in the United States. State and local health officials are
notifying those who may have been exposed.
This is the first measles case in Kansas since 2018. Measles symptoms
usually appear 10 to 14 days after exposure, though they can develop
as early as 7 days or as late as 21 days, the state says. Early
symptoms include fever, runny nose, cough and red eyes, followed by a
rash. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment said in a news
release that the best way to prevent measles is to get the MMR
vaccine.
Stevens County is about 400 miles from the Kansas City metro area.
