In a press statement, the Ministry of Health and Social Development of Gedaref state has revealed that the state has registered 3009 confirmed cases of [visceral] leishmaniasis with 64 deaths in the year 2023. Of these cases, 2320 were among children up to 15 years of age. During the first quarter of 2024, 956 cases of visceral leishmaniasis were registered in the state with 29 deaths.
