The state [Tamil Nadu] has added nearly 50 new cases of dengue every
day over the last 14 days, taking the official tally to 5356 since 1
Jan 2023. At least 5 deaths have been reported since 1 Jan 2023,
health minister Ma Subramanian said.

The number of admissions increased from 345 on 30 Sep 2023 to 420 on 5
Oct 2023 and 531 on Thursday [19 Oct 2023]. “Dengue cases go up in the
state between September and December every year,” he said.

On most occasions, the breeding sources of dengue-causing Aedes
mosquitoes have been people’s terraces or gardens. However, it may not
be higher than the number reported in 2012 and 2017, he added.

In 2012 and 2017, the state reported more than 60 deaths due to
dengue, he said. There were 4486 dengue cases and 13 deaths in 2018,
followed by 8527 cases and 5 deaths the next year [2019]. In 2020,
there were 2410 cases. In 2021, there were 8 deaths and cases went up
to 6039. Last year [2022], Tamil Nadu reported 8 deaths, and 6430
cases were reported to the National Centre for Vector Borne Disease
Control. “We are hoping to see fewer than 6000 cases this year
[2023],” he said.
