How many times have I heard Americans in one breath: extolling their good fortune while mocking the people who still need goats.
Many have asked me, Charley, why goats? They’re the poor man’s horse.
I say, because of Haiti and Kenya, The Indus valley in now Pakistan. The Middle East, Christ right. Thousands of years in China and India. Almost any country in Africa. The Alps. The Andes. The Tibetan Plateau. The Freeman’s journey from bondage. You don’t think the Israelites walked with goats for 40 years in the desert.
In The Galapagos they hunt goats now , unapologetically, to save the endemic inhabitants. I understand and yet recognize The United States of America only has a couple of hundred years of endemicity also, and people don’t despise us enough to wipe us out without remorse
Well not yet. How many people did Trump openly or discreetly insult and abuse today?
What’s the difference between a goat and most US citizens, well 80 years of life I suppose and our mighty brains, but to what end? I would balance an animal that passes, literally non-stinking restorative agriculture pellets to most humans that cheer the destruction of their communities and ecosystems because someone they know somewhere got wealthier by avoiding taxes.
Forty-years-ago there were over nine million goats in the USA alone. Now, there’s less than one million.
The goat and human team must be our cause too. We must learn from each, work together, because they remember all the things we once could do without gasoline and crypto, and the latter is destroying us.
