As Public Health threats go from a novel infectious disease scenario I would rate it a 1 out of 10 with 1 being least concern. We are not talking about a bacteria and certainly it isn’t a retrovirus. The threat is an endemic protozoan spread from water contaminated with feces, and now under Trump its wrecking havoc in the U.S. The amateurism of our present CDC, and the tragedy that still people will die a want of clean produce. When you gut surveillance systems, this is what you catch.
The real tragedy though, aside from avoidable vulnerable populations suffering, is that we only know about Cyclospora at a time when surveillance in the U.S. has never been weaker.
There is no room for dark age ignorance like this when it comes to Public Health. The next Pandemic could be months away and we will have no idea this time it’s coming, and without vaccines and active surveillance for real threats, well all is darkness.
