▪️Jan Ingenhousz (1730-1799) repeated Priestley’s experiment but added that sunlight was also needed to purify the air, as well as explaining it was the green section of the plant that cleared the air. He thus proposed a theory of photosynthesis that was later rejected
▪️Joseph Priestley (1733-1804) used experiments with mint sprig and candle to observe the air remains relatively “pure” when exposed to byproducts of combustion in 1771. Today we know actually the atmosphere is composed of the mixture of CO2 that animals exhale and which the plants absorb in exchange for O2. Furthermore we understand this metabolic pathway was first invented by microbes and then further advanced by plants and animals over evolutionary history.
